After the 2002 statement put out by the AAP which said gay parents of adopted children do not pose any risk to the children, a subset of the members abandoned their former organization in order to establish the ACPeds. This particular medical organization, separate from the AAP, has been branded an LGBT hate group due to their propagation of beliefs such as reparative therapy for gay youth, opposition of transgender youth, and protest against homosexual parents.
