Better Survival for Ovarian Cancer Patients Who Join Clinical Trials

— Molly Morton, MD, calls the study a "jumping off point"

Patients with platinum-resistant epithelial ovarian cancer who participate in clinical trials may have higher rates of overall survival compared with those who don't participate in clinical trials, according to findings presented at the recent Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) annual meeting.

In this video, study presenter Molly Morton, MD, a gynecology oncology fellow at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Columbus, discusses why the results are so promising for future studies.

Following is a transcript of her remarks:

This study was a retrospective patient cohort study looking at patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer and overall survival in a clinical trial participant cohort, as well as a standard-of-care patient cohort.

So in comparing those two cohorts, we didn't find any differences between oncologic prognostic factors or baseline demographics, but we did ultimately find a difference in overall survival from the time of platinum-resistance for clinical trial participants versus the standard of care.

So the median survival in those groups were 13.8 months versus 10.5 months, respectively. So in the setting of everything that we know about the lack of efficacy of our currently approved therapies and clinical trials, allowing us to treat patients with novel therapies, it's exciting to know that it's also improving patients survival as well.

There's a lot of things that we're really excited to look into from this study. It's kind of like a jumping off point for us. You know, this being a smaller single-institution group of patients, giving us such promising results, it's something that we're excited to kind of start looking at. If we combine other institutions and look at other disease sites, if we can provide this same consistent information for all of our gynecologic cancer patients, then that would be something great.
